Remember a few weeks back when I went to the premiere of Touchstone Pictures Gnomeo and Juliet and couldn’t wait to tell you about the movie? Well now I can! IF you haven’t heard anything about the film yet I know what your thinking. The beautiful Romeo and Juliet love story by William Shakespeare with Garden Gnomes?!? SERIOSULY?!? WAIT. You haven’t heard the magic ingredient yet. Music by Elton John. Wait for it. Wait for it. Now it kinda sounds interesting doesn’t it? So what exactly is this movie about?
The greatest love story ever told, starring…garden gnomes? In the upcoming “Gnomeo & Juliet,” Shakespeare’s revered tale gets a comical, off-the-wall makeover. Directed by Kelly Asbury (“Shrek 2”) and showcasing both classic and original songs by Elton John, the film features the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as Gnomeo and Juliet, who have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors. But with plastic pink flamingos and thrilling lawnmower races in the mix, can this young couple find lasting happiness?
Two garden gnomes, Gnomeo (voice of James McAvoy) and Juliet (voice of Emily Blunt), try to avoid tragedy and find a happy ending to their star-crossed love affair when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors.
The music helps you get into the story of these particular Garden Gnomes and you find yourself singing along to some of Elton John’s most famous hits. Then you get pulled into their story. Red Gnome vs. Blue Gnome. A war. Sneaking around. A love that is “doomed”. Lots of action. Lots of drama. It’s starting to sound like a regular movie. That’s what kept getting me and drawing me in. This was a timeless tale of acceptance modernized for families. My kids will understand this epic tale and laugh and sing while they do it.
I wouldn’t be me without touching on the 3D element, but like in Tangled it’s very understated here. There were a couple of they typical 3D tricks, but they were done right and fit seamlessly into the movie.
Bottom line you NEED to see this movie. Whatever your tastes are no matter your age you will fall in love with this movie. I think it is suitable for kids of all ages as long as they can keep their 3D glasses on. I’m not going to give away any big plot details, but don’t worry about the whole Suicide element in the real Romeo and Juliet. Touchstone Pictures kept it suitable for everyone. You can buy your tickets in advance through Fandango that way there is no waiting in line. Make sure to come back and leave me a comment letting me know what you thought about it! You can even leave a comment on the Gnomeo and Juliet facebook telling your favorite part in the film!
