Morhan Spurlock is THE go to documentary film maker right now. Everything he touches performs well and has a unique way of telling a story. Which in it’s own way is why he was the perfect choice to direct the film This is Us. For the boys, the fans, and the movie goers this was a match made for history. I’ve always like him and was glad to see him in NYC at the Q&A for the film. Check out a few questions from the Q&A below as well as a group picture!
MS: a 1D Dad! I love seeing 1DDads in here as well. It’s not just about the 1D Moms. There’s some 1DDads out there too.
How did you get involved with this project?
MS: I got a call from the studio around June of last year to see if I’d be willing to come in and meet with them about possibly directing the film. 3 years ago I got a call from Paramount to come meet with them about possibly doing the Justin Bieber, at which time I was making a movie called The Greatest Movies Ever Sold, so I was just incompletely unavailable. Last January I got called by Paramount again. To possibly come meet with them about the Katy Perry Film. At which time we were both finishing Mansome and Comic Con Episode IV and I was like there is no way I can add a third movie to this. I’d go nuts. So then in June after we had delivered both of those films. The studio called and said hey have you ever heard of this band? I was like of COURSE I have. I jumped at the chance to throw my hat in the ring.
Question: How different is it doing this type of documentary vs. what you’ve done in the past?
MS: With a film like this it’s great. 1. I’ve got 5 infinitely more handsome guys than to put on camera in this. Which I think is a real help. With a movie like this there is so many differences. One, of the biggest ones is that there’s this massive fanbase that’s already supportive of the project from the beginning. Which is incredible to already have that behind a movie. To have the support of the studio is wonderful and to have a great story. What I love about these guys is that it is a great story that they have. They were these 5 ordinary guys who went to audition for a talent show 3 years ago and never came home…and have became one of the biggest bands in the world. That’s remarkable!
MS: It was really important from the beginning for me to put the families in there. Being someone who my family has been such an important impact on who I am and who I became as an adult. You can see that in these guys. Part of the reason, why they are so humble and so grounded and I think that they have such a good outlook is because of where they came from. You know, they come from good stock, as my mom would say. I think it’s obvious when you go home and you see who their moms and dads are and kind of where they came from. The humblest of humble beginnings. I think it’s really important to get a sense of what made them who they are and it’s also important to get a sense of the sacrifice that these guys make. I don’t think a lot of people realize how much work goes into being in a band like this. These guys are on the road, and traveling, and working, and constantly…..They think that They gotta show up they look pretty, they go on stage, sing , get paid giant checks and go home. There is a tremendous amount of work that goes into that which I think the movie really shows
As you can tell Morgan Spurlock really enjoyed making this film and spending time with the boys. Have YOU seen This is Us yet? To read my review go HERE. Bottom line, grab the family and go to the theater this weekend for some extra cheeky fun!
