Today, opioid prescription painkiller addiction also known as opioid dependence affects millions of Americans. While opioid prescription painkillers are effective medicines, some people develop opioid dependence as an unexpected consequence of proper pain treatment.
I’ve dealt with substance abuse my whole life and while mine was never opioid dependance I have lost many friends and family to it. Some in jail, some got help, some lost their life. It is SO much more prevalent in today’s society. It’s easy to want to “fix” or “escape” your problems with a pill. One leads to another and yet another. When I was younger I went through a phase and it took my mom putting me in a room and confronting me with doctors present before I finally asked for help. Years later I’ve been the one confronting friends and family. You can’t help someone unless they’ve hit rock bottom or truly want to change, but be there for them. Don’t enable…just let them know you love them and will continue loving them. There are many misconceptions about opioid dependence. Please read through this fact sheet with survey results.
What resonated with me the most was these 2 facts:
- FACT: OD is a Chronic Medical Disease That Affects the Brain and Fools It Into Thinking the Opiod is Necessary for Survival.
- FACT: 88% of Doctors recognize addiction is a disease, only 59% of adults believe it’s a disease.
The good news is getting help is easier than ever. Turntohelp.comm is an online resource that allows people to anonymously research opioid dependence, find help and treatment options. So if your lost and don’t know where to look or go check them out. Go to a friend or family member and admit you have a problem and ask for help.
