We all fell in love with Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, and the sequel that hit theaters last fall opened at number one at the box office. With Bill Hader reprising his role of Flint Lockwood and Anna Faris returning as Sam Sparks, the dynamic duo returns to a now overgrown jungle that was once their hometown of Swallow Falls to find Flint’s abandoned invention and save the world from food animals. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 is now available on DVD and Blu-ray with a series of bonus features that give a whole new look at the franchise and making of the film. I had the chance to visit Sony Pictures Animation to check out the new bonus features available with the DVD and Blu-ray, as well as talk to some of the creative talent that brought Cloudy 2 to life.
The best part of the bonus features is the four shorts that bring back some of the film’s supporting characters as leading stars. Attack of the 50-Foot Gummi Bear is my favorite, because I’m a sucker for gummi bears, but I also can’t get enough of Steve! When Flint leaves his beloved pet gummi bear unattended with his new invention, the mischievous candy enlarges himself to be 50 feet tall, and Steve has to get everything under control before Flint returns home. Steve is also the main character of Steve’s First Bath, where in refusing to bathe, Steve ruins all of Flint’s date preparations for Sam. Also featured are Earl Scouts and Super Manny, where Earl Scout foodimals become too competitive in a survival of the fittest competition, and camera man Manny gets his shot at being a hometown hero by breezing through a serious of obstacles on his way to meet Sam for a report.
Older kids and parents will love the behind the scenes looks featured on the home release. The credit sequence seems cute and simple, but actually combines several styles of animation, as well as live-action and stop motion. I spoke with animator Seamus Walsh about the use of puppetry in the sequence, and how handmade puppets were integrated into the animation. He demonstrated how the puppet for Flint’s dad, Tim, was made to about the same scale as the boat which he appears to be sailing in, and the recorded video of the puppet was composited onto the boat for the final end credits.
