Maleficent is an origin story at it’s finest. We always see the “villain” in mostly a one dimensional arc. They are cursing people, taking away love, life, and laughter, etc. This reminds me a bit of the newest Oz film by Disney, in that it shows you why a villain like Maleficent becomes the “bad girl”. The evil inside comes from a dark place, a betrayed place. Something that if we honestly look inside ourselves we identify with. I’m going to try and review this with as few spoilers as I can because I want you to be just as shocked and excited as I was.
We start the film in 2 places. The kingdom and The Moors. The Moors is a beautifully magical place of fairies, creatures, and more. We meet a young Maleficent who turns into a strong, brilliant, and most powerful fairy……..who has wings. (SHOCK)
I never knew before the film that she had wings so when I first saw the teaser trailers out with these magnificent wings I immediately wanted to know more. How did something so beautiful turn into the evil that she became. More importantly WHERE ARE HER WINGS?
Here is where I’ll leave you for a moment…..with curiosity blooming I’m sure. It’s gets dark and twisty, but worth every moment.
We pick up in a more familiar place. Aurora, the princess has a big celebration going on at the castle and of course Maleficent wasn’t invited. We see the new her….the one we recogonize immediately from the classic Sleeping Beauty film and “well….well”. Angelina takes over the screen again and you love every delicious evil moment. She curses the princess with the famous line, “She will prick her finger”
Here the story veers off and you see what “actually” happened as Aurora grew up with the 3 fairies, her godmother, and the raven watched over her. Along the way you do meet Prince Phillip, you see the King go mad, you see evil and love. This film was everything I’ve been waiting on and more and I can’t wait for you to take the family to see it this weekend. IT OPENS TODAY!
I’ve been asked if the film was ok for children. There are a couple of intense battle scenes (no blood), but you know your child. My whole family has seen it (Me numerous times) and we all love it.
