Last week while I was in LA for the #ABCFamilyEvent we went to the set of the new comedy show Mystery Girls. First let me tell you a bit about the show:
Mystery Girls, starring Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth follows two former detective TV show starlets brought back together by a real-life mystery. Charlie Contour (Garth) is a suburban housewife and mother, while Holly Hamilton (Spelling) longs for her glory days in the 90’s when she was on television. Both of their lives are disrupted when Nick (Pinzon), a witness to a crime and a ‘Mystery Girls’ fanatic, will only speak to the infamous duo, and the former friends must reunite and put their TV crime-solving skills to the test.
Tori Spelling (Beverly Hills, 90210, Tori & Dean: Inn Love), Jennie Garth (Beverly Hills, 90210, What I Like About You) and newcomer Miguel Pinzon (A New York Love Story) star in the series. Tori Spelling, Jennie Garth and Maggie Malina (Single Ladies) will serve as executive producers. The story is by Tori Spelling and Shepard Boucher (Men at Work). The pilot was written by Shepard Boucher.
Mystery Girls is a fun campy take on 2 friends who used to be on a tv show and now are crime fighters themselves. It brings back the familiar faces of Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth and the joyous days of their 90210 days. We met with them on set and also had the chance to see them rehearse and film a few scenes.
You could see the chemistry on set and during the interviews. These girls have a deep friendship and know what the other is thinking/doing before they say or do it. It’s familiar territory.
Mystery Girls is a brainchild of Tori Spelling:
I had done a Christmas movie for ABC Family and I knew they were looking for comedies and I used to be a huge fan of mysteries in the eighties and my dad’s shows and I loved Remington Steele and I just wanted to pair that with comedy.
Tori asked Jennie in an email if she liked to be on the show. Jennie had this to say about working with Tori again:
We have fun. We have so much fun and it’s just really easy. You know we know each other very well so there’s, we’re past all the, the awkward getting to know each other and we kind of know e-each other’s ups and downs, when we need space, when we-, you know need comforting and it’s like what we-, we’re very familiar with each other already so. And we already have that built in chemistry too as actresses so.
Miguel Pinzon was also on set and the energy he brings is phenomenal! It’s no wonder he’s already been nominated for a Teen Choice Award. He got the news that day and was dancing around set with a huge smile on his face.
He also took time out to spend with us taking fun selfies and telling us all about working with Tori and Jennie:
It’s amazing to see their shorthand. There’s this ongoing joke that they have in the script of the characters which is like are you thinking what I’m thinking? And then usually Holly’s character — Tori’s character will say something completely off the mark and that’s always where the joke is. But they actually often are thinking what the other one is thinking. I just sort of love seeing how collaborative they are and the fact that they’re not only acting on it but are executive producers on it.
And just seeing that relationship, that balance is inspiring because you got to make your own work. No one’s giving it to you. Something I keep trying to learn. And then at the same time on tape night the residual 90210 fan base is incredible. They are always here, so supportive and they like — their jaws hit the floor when it’s like oh my God it’s Donna and Kelly.
He also talked about how excited he is for his first big role:
This is my first big rodeo. I came from New York and had been in LA for a period of time and did a little thing on Law and Order. And then did a little bit on 30 Rock. But this is like my first series regular thing and my first time I get to do three camera comedy like just a dream. It’s so awesome.
TUNE IN TONIGHT!
