Usually, when a movie is based on a book I always read it beforehand. This time however I did not get a chance and I think I enjoyed it more than if I knew what was coming. 100 Foot Journey is just that….A journey of young man Hassan Dayal (Manish Dayal) and his family. A Journey of Culture. A Journey of Love and Friendship. Last, but certainly not least a journey of food.
The lovely Helen Mirren plays Madame Mallory and she was great as always. There is even a tongue in cheek reference to to “the Queen” if you watch closely. However Manish Dayal takes over the film. He embraced this role fully and you feel for his character Hassan immediately. He and his family come from India, but Hassan has a gift for food and yearns to become a Master Chef so his journey takes him further.
Through a series of events the family must leave their home in India and as they travel they end up in France. Their goal is to open up a restaurant Maison Mumbai that serves Indian Cuisine…..which just so happens to be 100 feet away from Madame Mallory’s restaurant which is Michelin-starred. Hilarity then ensues as Madame Mallory and Papa Om Puri strive to best each other by sabotage. These 2 characters bounce off each other nicely and make us secretly hope for a love interest.
Speaking of love interest. Hassan meets the lovely Marguerite played by Charlotte Le Bon. He is smitten by the french girl from the very beginning and she is intrigued by this young man who has a gift for cooking.
As the film progresses food slowly becomes the main Character and you can almost taste and smell it through the screen. This film is for everyone, but if you love a good romance or are a foodie this will be in your top 3 films of 2014. So make sure you go see it this weekend!
