Every holiday brings back certain memories from my childhood. Traditions are performed. The house is decorated. We tell stories over good food, etc. One thing that has remained constant this time of year is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. I’ve been told I watched it all my life, but the first time I really remember watching it was when I was 5 years old. I learned the song at school and my mom let us make reindeer cookies on the night it played on tv. My little sister was a baby and I remember crawling up into my my mothers lap, the entire house smelling of sugar cookies and I was mesmerized. Rudolph didn’t look like the cartoons I was used to watching. It was more magical. When Rudolph went out on his own after being made fun of my heart hurt for him. I didn’t quite understand why, but I knew at the moment that no matter what the others said Rudolph was special.
Over the years our tradition continued and then I grew up and had children of my own. I remember the first time my oldest was able to understand the movie and he too felt sad for Rudolph and said “Why do they have to be so mean mama?” It just goes to show that not only has this movie stood the test of time, but even the message of bullying and how it’s wrong to make fun of those unlike you has carried over as well.
ABOUT THE ANNIVERSARY: “50 Years and Still Glowing”
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is the longest-running and highest-rated holiday TV special of all time, and it is inarguably a beloved part of the American holiday tradition.
The anniversary celebration includes a major tie-in with the U.S. Postal Service, tribute promos from CBS, a collector’s edition DVD with new bonus material, a new stage musical, theme park and in-mall entertainment, and a social media campaign – #ShineBright – that celebrates uniqueness in association with PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center.
The kids and I have had a great time getting excited for our annual cookie bake and viewing of the movie by reading all of these fun books. There is something for ALL ages!
