McFarland USA hits theaters everywhere today. Sports films come a dime a dozen anymore, but it takes heart and the right cast and crew to make you feel like this one is different. In fact, this is a sports movie directed by a female: Niki Caro. She is most famously know for being the writer and director for Whale Rider (2002). She was up to the task and drove right in. In fact she says:
I figured out the way I work best. Which is real stories and real people. Go to the real community. Ask for their collaboration. Keep my eyes and my ears open and my mouth shut.
I’ve grown to love this genre of film because my husband enjoys them. Since I saw McFarland USA before him he’s been begging me for details, but he’s just going to have to go watch the film just like everyone else.
This film can resonate with anyone. It’s a true underdog story that sheds light on the story of pickers and the backbreaking work they do day in and day out. Starting at a very young age they help their family by working in the fields. It’s generation after generation. These kids from this small town in the middle of nowhere don’t have many goals or expectations other than the fields….picking.
Then Jim White played by Kevin Costner gets “relocated” to this small town. It’s not his choice and he’s not sure this is a safe place for his family.
In gym class one day he notices how fast a few of his pupils are….which peaks his curiosity. He learns more about his students and their hardships and decides to create a cross country team. Here’s the thing. He has no experience. The kids aren’t too sure if they want to join. The parents aren’t too happy about the kids missing their picking shifts. All in all it seems like it’s destined to fall.
However, these kids are used to long odds and with the commitment of Coach White they become a team. The film then tells their journey from training, racing for the first time, wins, losses, and some home trouble. It pulls the heartstrings and by the end of the film you will want to go grab your McFarland Cougars gear and root for them just as much!
