Comedic sitcoms are easy to do wrong. It’s great when one comes along that is Laugh Out Loud funny, great acting, and nostalgic. ABC has had good luck with this type of show. Just look at Modern Family, The Goldbergs, and Black-ish. It’s showing there is more to America that what is perceived. Fresh Off The Boat is that and more. What’s it about?
It’s the 90s and 12 year old, hip-hop loving Eddie (Hudson Yang) just moved to suburban Orlando from DC’s Chinatown with his parents (Randall Park and Constance Wu). It’s culture shock for his immigrant family in this comedy about pursuing the American Dream. “Fresh Off the Boat” is based on Chef Eddie Huang’s memoir Fresh Off the Boat.
“Fresh Off the Boat” is executive produced and written by Nahnatchka Kahn and executive produced by Jake Kasdan.

In an effort to win the respect of the neighborhood kids, Eddie (Hudson Yang) hatches a scheme to snag a “fine shorty.” But rather than set his sights on a girl from school, he focuses his attentions on his attractive–and much older–neighbor. From Fresh Off the Boat, Season 1, Episode 3, “The Shunning.” ABC TUESDAYS 8|7c.
I’ve watched the first 4 episodes and let me tell you. I have laughed at every one. It’s such a good story and with the comedy added in it just makes it perfect.
The boys from the Show Forrest Wheeler and Ian Chen sat down with us to chat about being on the show
When asked about the most exciting part of being on TV Forrest was quick to answer. He said, “It’s just seeing yourself on TV and really can’t believing that it’s you. Because when I watch it, is that really me or just some other person they edited?”
Both kids seem to love being on the show, but also understand that it’s only a job. They both put their first paycheck in their college fund. Also, when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, Forrest had surprising non-Hollywood answer. He replied, “I want to be an entrepreneur. Well, I maybe wanna be a pilot or a captain of a cruise ship, or own a cruise ship company, or I wanna be a hotel owner. I wanna be a CEO…”
These kids like school, like to play, and like to work. Their mothers were nearby as well. They mentioned how much time they spend together while filming and just to hang around with each other. You can tell family is important to them both.
FRESH OFF THE BOAT – “Success Perm” – Family rivalry spirals out of control when Jessica’s sister, Connie, and her far more affluent husband come to visit. Meanwhile, Eddie is excited to be reunited with his cousin Justin, who introduced him to hip hop, until he learns the kid has moved on to grunge, on “Fresh Off the Boat,” TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10 (8:30-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
