Sandy Powell has been in the business for quite some time now. She’s done a bit of costume designing for every genre. Whether she is styling gangsters in The Departed to Prince and Princesses in Cinderella she excels at her art. She sat down with us bloggers for a bit to chat and let us into the process that is Costume Designer.
SP: I kind of chose all the color palettes for each of the characters. I don’t pick colors for symbolic reasons. I pick colors because they feel right. And because I like them. I have a much more, uh, instinctive feel about – or intuitive reaction. I work closely with the people who design the sets and the set dressing, so that we make sure that nothing clashes with the curtains. All the furnishings. That’s one of the things I really really enjoy more than anything else.
As you can see Sandy chose bright colors and mashed them all together. It looks STUNNING on screen. The colors, the shapes, the silhouettes are just art.
About Lady Tremaine’s Colors:
SP: of course the green does represent envy. All her colors were chosen,(because) they’re cool colors. I mean, none of them are kind colors or fresh colors or youthful colors, particularly though, I think they’re attractive colors ’cause I wanted her to look like a fashion plate and attractive. They’re strong, but all of them are kind of bit mean.
On The Ball Gown:
SP: I’m incredibly proud of the Ball Gown. You can’t not be because that’s the one that took the longest. I spent the longest on it, developing it. It might not have worked, but it came out exactly how I hoped. So I’m proud of that one.
As you can tell she loves each piece and said that they were like children. You couldn’t pick your favorite. I know personally I can’t either. Each one is unique and brings something different to the scene. Even the jewelry! In fact Sandy worked with Atelier Swarovski to create the “Tremaine Collection” where you can buy specific pieces over at atelierswarovski.com.
