It was a blistery night in Detroit, temperatures reaching below zero when you factored in the windchill, when I arrived at a nondescript warehouse a few short blocks from Detroit’s Greektown. The inside of the warehouse was chilly but as I moved through the throngs of journalist I could feel the excitement warming the air. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres flowed through the building as it was cascaded in dark red lighting. The mood had been set and our response was enigmatic. The wait for Kia Motors America to unveil their latest creation was passed in conversation and yet I noticed something interesting of my peers. While we talked and mingled to pass the time our bodies were always turned toward the front of the room. Our feet slowly drifting toward the stage, some seemingly of their own accord and others (like mine) with great purpose. Pushing forward with eager anticipation. No one wanted to miss a moment.
Finally the room darkened, with the ceremony and excitement that I have become to expect from this brand who so passionately puts their hearts on the line with every unveiling, we were formally introduced to the Kia Stinger. It rolled across the stage like that of royalty. It’s refined lines, striking red color and distinctive chrome accents held us captivated. Standing on the balls of our feet, peering around our comrades trying to keep our eyes glued as it came to a complete stop.
@kiamotorsusa just changed the game in a BIG way! In Detroit they just debuted their FIRST muscle car!!! The #KiaStinger is full of sexy lines and symmetry inside and out. Tops out at 167 mph, features AWD, 19 inch wheels, and the latest in autonomous assistance #NAIAS #naiasdetroit #carporn #autobahn #TheNewKia #MyKiaLife #KiaMom
Then we swarmed. Marveling at each detail. It’s pristine beauty quickly marred by fingerprints as hands stroked it’s lines and curves. It was everything we could want in a sports sedan, and as a loyal follower of the brand, it was everything I expected it to be. Statement making without ostentation. A sports sedan swathed in luxury and performance.
In other words, it’s everything car buyers are looking for. Its sexy european styled interior comes in both daring and demure color schemes while features below the surface such as the availability of a twin-turbo option, rear or all-wheel drive choices and the ability to hit 100kmp in 5.2 seconds leaves little to be desired.
Still, what is fun without safety? Bearing its weight in an exhaustive list of the latest technology and safety features the 2018 Kia Stinger introduced Kia’s new Driver Attention Alert, the ability to sound an alert and display graphic when it senses that a drive may be drowsy or their attention has been compromised. Of course, it also comes with Kia’s other notable safety features including Forward Collision Assistance, Advanced Smart Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
No Kia debut would be complete without a host of technological features to make the techy in all of us weep in binary 1’s and 0’s. The Stinger comes equipped with the a driver centric infotainment system, complete with system information displayed across the windshield, a smartphone charging pad in the console, and the ability to control numerous functions directly from the steering wheel.
And so we marveled, and marveled. The next day as Kia made its formal unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show, journalist and automotive enthusiast lingered over the exhibit for hours. Drawn to the vehicles as though they were magnets. It was this captivation that won the Kia Stinger the 2017 NAIAS Best in Show Award.
It may sound as though I am enamored with this car, and this brand but the truth is, I am. I’ve been covering the Kia Brand for the better part of five years and in that time I have come to respect and admire their desire to push the envelope as they create. For 20 years Kia has been battling consumer perception and critism from it’s automotive peers. But what I find remarkable is that they refuse to be put in the boxes that others draw from them.
Kia continues to push outside boundaries and set the industry on it’s head by offering value and quality in each new offering. The wonderful thing about being put into a box is that when you ignore that box, you get to constantly surprise people. To do what is not expected of you. Kia embodies this so thoroughly in it’s culture is it any wonder their slogan is “The Power to Surprise.”? The Kia Stinger serves as yet another push forward in the evolution of the brand. In the words of Michael Sprague Kia’s Executive Director of Sales and Marketing, “The Kia you knew even 5 or 10yrs ago is gone. The Kia Stinger sets the tone of what you can expect to see more of.”
This NEW offering from Kia won Best In Show from Cars.com in Detroit PLUS this fastback sedan has been honored with an EyesOn Design award for Production Car Design Excellence at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. I have a feeling that’s only the beginning! Keep an eye out for this one!
