Michael Rooker is best known as a character actor and quite a character he is. We were watching him film on set and every once in awhile he would turn and give us a little wave. Then he made the rest of the cast turn and wave. It was cute and adorable. We waited for a break when each one of the cast came into a small room where we could have a quick interview with them between filming. Michael Rooker walked in with his full Yondu on. I’m talking big blue fin, cool clothes, make up, contacts, and teeth. Yep, you read that right. Michael Rooker brought his “Yondu teeth” aka “uppers” in just so we could look at them and man oh man were those some epic chompers. I don’t see how you could have a conversation in those things, but again, this is a guy who will do almost anything for his craft. Then we got right ahead with his interview:
Q: How long does the makeup take?
MR: About two hours. Half of this is makeup and half of this is just me. I’m like a blue man from Kentucky. You know they have real blue people in Kentucky and they’re called the Blue People of Kentucky. [LAUGHS]
Q: Is the new addition blue fin heavy?
MR: A lot of people like this fin, yeah and it’s awesome. The fin’s not heavy. Not at all. It’s hollow and I thought they were going to put practical lights and different things in it, but they decided not to. They just decided to keep it just natural and not, well, what’s natural. It’s, a fin growing out of my head, you know. So they didn’t put the lights in. If they’re going to do that kind of stuff, they’ll do it in post, so in post-production they’ll do that.
Q: Is the fin in the storyline?
MR: Yes. A bit, yeah, because you saw my fin the last movie. It was a short little stubby thing. And that worked but, that worked for my ship. That’s what they told me [LAUGHS] anyway. Well, your ship is low and you know, with a regular big fin, you would be hitting the ceiling. I was like, oh, okay. So I fell for that. Anyway, this time around, I, I get, you know, I have a little of both. I have the, I have the short fin and, and this fin here, so yeah.
Q: Have you teamed up with some of the Guardians of the Galaxy?
MR: They’ve teamed up with me. Please. I’m the one that can whistle and take out a whole army, okay? [LAUGHS]
Q: How hard is it to get into character?
MR: Na, na, not too hard because it was really written for me, so he uses a lot of my, just some ways I deal with things. You know, some, a bit, little bits in there and physically. I think the thing that attracts people and the audiences to this film is the first one. Is because the characters are very human-like. We have our faults and yeah. We all think better than we really are, you know, so yeah, I do. No definitely. He thinks he’s pretty cool and uh, yeah.
Q: Have you been doing a lot of stunts?
MR: Yeah, there’s some wire stuff going on. It’s pretty safe. We got these harnesses and everything’s, the cables are like quarter, I mean, they’re really, they hold thousands of pounds, so and I’, not that heavy and if you get tangled up in it, can not be fun. We’re not doing any real stunts. I don’t, I don’t consider it stunts, you know. It’s just part of what we’re, some of the action that we’re going to be doing requires the wires and stuff.
