Alice (Jenna Elfman) has her life turned upside-down when she falls for the love of her life Ben (Stephen Schneider)— an adorable, quick-witted divorced father with three kids. But when she ignores her fears of commitment and her ability to mother, Imaginary Mary, her childhood invention (voiced by Rachel Dratch), comes back to life to express Alice’s deepest fears and add more chaos to the situation. Imaginary Mary coming this March to ABC!
While in LA I saw a screening of the pilot episode and also had the chance to meet Jenna Elfman who plays “Alice”, Stephen Schneider who plays “Ben” and Executive Producers David Guarascio & Patrick Osborne. It was such a cute and funny show. I personally never had an Imaginary friend growing up, but my sister did and there was a super fun movie in the 80s that was similar called Drop Dead Fred. From the pilot episode, I can see both moments of joy, heart, and fun. I can’t wait to see what happens! Now let’s get to some fun Facts about the show:
Mary herself is from the brilliant minds of Patrick Osbourne. The name may sound familiar because he is the Oscar winning creator of the fun animated short “Feast.” He worked with the creators to come up with Mary’s design and really wanted her to be “Loveable.” Sometimes she sticks by Alice’s independent streak and not always says the right thing, but don’t we all wish we had a figure like Mary in our life? At least sometimes. Plus, with her being so lovable looking she can “get away with saying more things she shouldn’t” said David Guarascio. Plus she is voiced by the incredible comedy talent that is Rachel Dratch.
In short Jenna Elfman has returned to network TV! Which is awesome for all of us that love her, but you may be surprised to find out she originally didn’t want to. In fact here are her exact words. “I said to my agents, I’m not doing another network show. Don’t even bring it to me. Don’t bring me any network shows because I’d just become so frustrated with my experiences in the last several years with network television.” Then she read the script which she thought was “full of possibilities” and also saw they were filming in Vancouver and the rest, as they say, is history.
A lot of the show mirrors David’s life, so when they brought David in that is where it all came together. A divorced Dad who just started dating (like Alice). Doug Robinson also said, “Adam and I had worked together previously, and I would just tell these stories about my wife, what she did, trying to slowly get integrated into my life and we just thought it’d be a great idea for a TV show.”
As you can tell this is going to be a FUN show for the entire family! Tune in TONIGHT TUESDAY, APRIL 4 (9:30–10:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network.
