About The Show:
Based on the web series, “Downward Dog” is about a struggling millennial, Nan (Emmy-nominated Allison Tolman, “Fargo”), from the point of view of her lonely and philosophical dog, Martin. One session at obedience school already makes them realize that even at their worst they may be the best thing for each other.
#5. It started as a Web Series
Accroding to Samm Hodges: “Michael Killen and I, we’re co-creators of the show, and we were both commercial directors working in Pittsburg and we created this web series four years ago. Now we started working on the web series and, just for fun, Michael had done a lot of stuff with talking animals (including) the Taco Bell Chihuahua. So, he like was well versed in how to make animals talk and not look like they’re just licking peanut butter off of their faces.”
#4. It’s Real
What Toy Story did for toys, Downward Dog is doing for pets. We’ve all wondered, “What exactly happens in our pets minds?” Downward Dog delivers. Not in just a funny way, but in a REAL way. I was happily impressed with the way Martin thought a situation was vs. what Nan thought. It showed actual life and anytime a show shows me actual real life looking back at me it wins bonus points. I also love the fact that they made Allison Tollman’s characther Nan very “non-hollywood”. She’s real and flawed.
#3. Martin is a Rescue Dog
This is a fun fact that I love. We all know Rescue Dogs need extra love and I’m so happy Martin found his people! Allison filled us in and said that “he is a 5 year old hound-mix, but mostly a mutt.” He was found in the Chicago shelter Paws Chicago. His actual name is Ned and he is not “show-ey.” I think he’s perfect! You would never tell by watching the show that this is first acting gig. They also shared that sometimes he does things his own way and they incorporate that into the show. Watch out for the scene of MArtin/Ned laying in front of the door and not moving. That actually happened and was not scripted.
#2. Official Selection at Sundance
In a BOLD move ABC is the first of the big 4 in network TV to showcase an upcoming show at Sundance. It gained “Official Selection” this past January and had been on my radar ever since. I love a good Sundance darling and Downward Dog doesn’t dissapoint!
#1. It’s FUNNY
Sitcoms come and go with quite a regularity, but the thing I first noticed abut this show was just how funny it was. I’m taking laughing out loud and holding my stomach from laughing so much. We screened the first 2 episodes and also chatted with Allison Tollman (Nan) and Samm Hodges (Voice of Martin the Dog). Tune in tonight for the debut on ABC at 9:30 PM (ET).
