About The Show:
The villain kids are going back to the isle and have found all new ways to be wicked!
The special two-hour telecast “Disney Channel Presents the 2017 Radio Disney Music Awards” (TONIGHT SUNDAY, APRIL 30 at 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., ET/PT) will include two big debuts from the highly anticipated “Descendants 2” — the exclusive world premiere of the “WAYS TO BE WICKED” music video and the movie’s must-see TRAILER DEBUT. “Descendants 2” stars including Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Sofia Carson, Booboo Stewart and China Anne McClain will all make appearances during the award show, but I have it EXCLUSIVELY for you a little early!
I was able to sit down with some of the Stars of the upcoming movie and here is what they had to say:
The lovely China Anne McClain comes on the scene as Uma, the daughter of The Little Mermaid‘s Ursula. A “frenemy” to Mal. She’s looking to settle a score….so WATCH OUT! Uma has her own pirate crew featuring Harry and Gil, the sons of Captain Hook, and Gaston. Excited yet? I saw a few scenes and the music video while out in LA for #Descendants2Event and let me say, you will be entranced! The music is catchy. The costumes are great. Everyone brings their A game. She chatted a bit about coming into the already established franchise and what it was like to play a Villain related to Ursula.
“She is one of my favorite movie villains ever. She has so much attitude. In preparation, I watched “The Little Mermaid” about 20 times before I went to Vancouver to shoot. I was looking at her mannerisms, how she talked and everything that she said, and that helped me a lot on set.”
Dove Cameron is back as Mal, Daughter of Maleficent. She chatted about how her charachter has changed in the new movie.
“When we pick back up, she knows what it feels like to be authentically loved and to have a space held for her to be supported. Just like any other human, you gravitate toward whatever you are used to. She has no idea how to deal with that. It’s almost impacting her negatively because she is thinking, ‘Oh, I only know how to build up my walls. I don’t even know how to function without my walls.’ Now she has to start over and fins what is for the first time in her life. Throughout the movie, she goes through a lot of incarnations of what she thinks Mal is and doesn’t really find herself until the end. That was a weird experience for me as an actress. To feel like I knew the character really well, and then to lose her as she’s losing herself, and then to find her again as she’s finding herself.”
The Daughter of the Evil Queen herself, Evie who is played by the lovely Sofia Carson is back as well. I’ve met her a few times and each time I’m impressed by her. She realizes how many young people look up to her and it’s not something she takes lightly. We asked her what is was like to be back on set:
“It was surreal. The first “Descendants” was my first movie. It changed my life and I fell in love with Evie and being able to tell her story. We’ve become such a family, and working with Kenny and everyone is always a dream. When we found out the sequel was green lit, we were just beyond thrilled. It was surreal to (go back) to the characters and tell their stories and see how they’ve evolved. The movie is just so much bigger in scope. It’s so epic and beautiful and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
Coming back as probably my favorite characther is Cameron Boyce who plays the son of Cruella De Ville. Cameron has been dancing since he was SIX years old! Talk about skill! We asked him about the choreography and working with the fabulous and uber talented Kenny ORtega and which movie was harder chorgraphy wise.
“I wouldn’t say (Descendants 1) was harder or more technical but there’s a certain mindset that you have to bring because it can be challenging. We go 3 weeks before we shoot anything just getting into shape. A lot of people aren’t dancers, they’re just actors, so they have to figure that out. It’s really difficult. You have to really buy in and Kenny asks a lot from everybody. He expects a lot. He does the important things, whatever he has to do, during the day and he comes back and he’s expecting. It can be a little scary at times. I would say that on the first one I learned how to completely go hands-on and in the second one I was just excited to do that again. You have to be comfortable. On the first one there was a learning curve, but on the second one I was ready to dive into it.”
Last, we have Boo Boo Stewart who plays Jafar’s son. I also fondly remember him from the Twilight movies. I’m a geeky girl what can I say. He is so sweet! We asked him about his storyline for the new movie and he had this to say:
“For Jay, specifically it’s the ability to change. There’s a really nice, subtle storyline that he has with the character Lonnie. He’s the captain of the Swords & Shields team and it’s in the rule book that it’s a guy sport. (Then Lonnie) shows up and pushes him to let her be on the team. As far as rules go, Jay has to decide between sticking to tradition or breaking the rules and being kicked off the team and losing his title. So he has to accept change and his decision there is a nice storyline.”
As you can see the stars are just as excited as we are! Make sure you tune in to Disney Channel July 21st for all the fun! I know both the kiddos and I are will be!
