It’s time to talk more about Coco! Keeping up with the rest of the #PixarCocoEvent coverage we are still learning about Dia de Los Muertos and Coco, the new animated film coming from Disney * PIXAR. It’s time to talk Alebrijes.
What are Alebrijes
The Alebrijes are imaginary creatures that have elements from different animals such as dragon bodies, bat wings, wolf teeth and dog eyes. Colorfully painted, they were originally made with papier mache but nowadays they are also wood carved. History. The Alebrije was created by Pedro Linares Lopez in the 1930’s.
The artist actually had a “fever dream where chimera animals came to life” which was the inspiration for him to create his own versions. If you get a chance, look up his artwork. He’s great.
What does this have to do with the animated film Coco? Quite a lot actually.
While there are many Alebrijes in the film Pepita has a special place. She is a mixture of a few different animals. If you look closely you can see bits of a tiger, a lizard, a ram, and an eagle. She’s graceful and fierce. While at PIXAR for the #PixarCocoEvent we sat with Alonso Martinez, Character/Rigging Artist who told us that he had actually been collecting Pedro Linares Lopez’s Alebrijes ever since he was a young boy. He even had a few that he brought in from his collection. They are pictured above. It was like he was meant to work on this film.
Alonso Martine also had us painting our own 3D printed Pepita, while we were chatting about all things Alebrijes. Let it be known that I’m not great at painting, but I gave it my best.
Each artist brings their own vision to their own Alebrijes and I went with my initial reaction to first seeing Pepita. I wanted her to be fierce and graceful. She now sits at my desk as my spirit guide. Without spoiling her presence in the film let’s just say she has a vital role bridging the land of the dead and the land of the living and is a spirit guide.
Coco Opens Nov. 22, 2017
