An ancient Ayruvedic practice is becoming quite the craze among holistic-lovers worldwide, and chances are you’re already in on it. If you have organic sesame, sunflower or coconut oil at home, you can take part in a new beauty routine that helps detox your body in just twenty minutes through a process known as oil pulling.
Under Ayurvedic tradition, oil pulling helps to remove toxic particles from your mouth through their ‘sticky’ qualities that literally grab and trap toxic particles that were living in one’s salivary glands. Whereas toothbrushes, mouthwash and floss are limited in what they can accomplish, oil pulling is able to reach all crevices and go to work better than their dental hygiene counterparts.
To take part in oil pulling at home, place a teaspoon of oil in your mouth (I prefer using organic coconut oil) and swish the oil around your mouth for twenty minutes before spitting it out. While it seems like a long period of time, the process can actually go by quickly if you incorporate oil pulling into your daily routine while getting dressed in the morning, or while in the shower. I’m a huge fan of oil pulling while answering emails, and then brushing my teeth after.
Before you start, please be advised that you should not swallow the coconut oil. After a few minutes of swishing, the liquid will be filled with nasty bacteria/ toxins that were hiding in your mouth and ingesting the old oil will just keep the toxins in your body. If you find that one teaspoon is too much oil, consider using just 1/4 a teaspoon and spitting out portions of the oil as needed. The longer the oil is in your mouth (up to twenty minutes) the better, so try to keep swishing unless you absolutely can’t continue.
After completing an oil pull, make sure to spit the old liquid into a napkin or trash bag. This applies to coconut oil pulls especially, but make sure that you do not spit out the liquid into a sink or toilet bowl, as the oil can potentially solidify again once they’re out of your warm mouth, and can do major damage to your home’s pipes.
The benefits of completing an oil pull are immense, with some health advantages visible immediately after your first pull. According to Dr. Oz, a reduction in plaque, removal of bacteria, and naturally clean teeth and gums are just a few of the positive outcomes, while I found myself having whiter teeth, better breath and less tooth sensitivity after the first day!
As always, it’s important to note that you should always talk to your doctor before trying a new holistic remedy such as oil pulling, especially if you have receding gums or are pregnant. By placing your health as a priority, this method is one of the quickest and most efficient ways of detoxing your body that will keep your mouth happy and healthy for weeks (or even months) to come. If you give oil pulling a try, make sure to comment with how this organic method worked for you!
